Recorded Bernard Fanning at Cafe Du Nord last week. Great show, great band. Bernard Fanning is the front man for the band, Powderfinger who enjoys enormous popularity in Australia. Should be taking over the US soon too. Highly recommend checking them out if they’re in a town near you.
Kronos Quartet played a September 11 memorial concert at the Herbst Theater in San Francisco on Monday. I produced and recorded the electronic tracks used on “Armenia” a composition by German industrialist / experimental group, Einsturzende Neubaten arranged by Paola Prestini. For the piece, they alternated between playing their stringed instruments and pounding on hubcaps, metal plates, a bathtub and other metal items, all beneath the menacing drone of a machine like loop that slowly altered throughout. It was a disturbing piece but really inventive and provocative.
A year in the making, Beth Waters’ new album will be released on Sept 12 on iTunes and other digital outlets.
We tracked it in about six different studios around San Francisco. Featuring performances by Todd Sickafoose (Ani DiFranco, Trey Anastasio), Kevin White (Chuck Prophette, Shelby Lynne), Eamonn Flynn (Spearhead), Stephen Prutzman (Tom Waits, Kronos Quartet) and a whole bunch of others, it’s a really fantastic album. Joe Chiccarelli (U2, Tori Amos, Frank Zappa) mixed half of it, and Boone and I mixed the other half.
The songs are some of the best that Beth has written and the album shows real growth from her last record that we recorded in 2002. I think this is my best production work to date. I’ll post a link once the album comes out.
KFOG’s Live from the Archives 13 was released this month.
Boone Spooner and I recorded songs by Keane, Corinne Bailey Rae and Gomez. We also mixed the Los Lonely Boys song “Heaven” which is the lead track on the disc.
It’s a great mix of music and proceeds go to support Bay Area food banks. So go out and get a copy at www.kfog.com
