Reviews: Francesca Lee – “The Pieces Left”

Francesca Lee’s new album “The Pieces Left” reviewed by the East Bay Express and Collected Sounds this week.

East Bay Express
“This is a very personal album, with lyrics that ring true to life. The music is light, airy pop with a melancholy tone, delicate and cleverly arranged. Thoroughly lovely stuff.
Collected Sounds
“This album is filled with lovely, melodic songs that channel more Nerina Pallot or Beth Waters than any hipster folkie. Francesca’s voice is beautiful. It’s peaceful and calming and suits this type of music very nicely. I really really like it. A beautiful record.”

“What’s Shaking Down SF Music Venues?” – Flux Summit panel @ Pyramind: Thur Jan 21

I’ll be moderating a panel this thursday at Pyramind in San Francisco where we will be discussing the California ABC’s efforts to shut down music venues in San Francisco and elsewhere in the state. It should be a lively discussion with representatives from the clubs, the SF entertainment commission, political candidates and local media. It’s a free event if you RSVP, so please do so here: http://pyramind.com/community/calendar/view/39/85.html

Sxsw thoughts

Real estate matters for a showcase. If you are unknown and have no real buzz, you need to be playing on 6th st

It is best to get on a bill that is sponsored by an established company / label or blog. They will promote and help bring an audience.

Playing in a big club after an established huge act is usually very bad

Playing a small club far away from town is really tough because traffic and lack of return cabs will make it very difficult to get a decent crowd.

South congress is a decent place to play because it has its own scene and crowd. It is less crowded than 6th st which is a good thing.

SXSW and music industry conferences

Heading to Austin after a night of 4 hours sleep.

Thoughts on how to do sxsw and most any conference

– don’t expect it to change your life. Go in with reasonable expectations of what it can do for your career. This starts with defining what you do expect.

– it is better to meet 3 people that you will stay in touch with than to meet 80 people who will not remember you

– it is better to make friends with people you enjoy hanging out with than to get to know someone simply because of their position. Great if you can do both, but the personal connection is far more important than the potential opportunity

-your personal interests and quirks , your story and personality are going to be far more engaging and memorable than your list of facts and accomplishments.

– be a person. Ambition clouds personality. It’s ok to have both but personality endures. Ambition, by its nature, is never satisfied.

– know your limits and push them. Know when to say no

– it is better to be the first to leave (and possibly miss something) than to stay too long (and possibly ruin it)

– maintain a sense of humor. Nothing smells like classless ambition than being over serious. If you go to a conference, you’ve already demonstrated that you’re serious. The trick is to be serious and still have fun.

– don’t feel compelled to do everything

– don’t be afraid to go out alone. It is often the best way to meet new people

– remember to listen. Ask questions. Stay humble. Learn things. It is easier to learn by asking questions and listening than by talking

– there are many people out there that know things you don’t. Learn from them.

– ask questions. Of others. Of yourself. Constantly ask yourself where you would like to be and how to get there. Ask for directions if you know the answer to the first but not the second

Recording the Pretenders and Amos Lee

2008-12-18Pretenders

Flying Kitchen recorded KFOG’s Concert for Kid’s at the Paramount Theater in Oakland.

The Pretenders and Amos Lee performed this year and it was a really great show.

I was pleasantly surprised when I ran into my old friend Michael Bellar, who plays keyboards for Amos Lee. I had walked on stage to check a mic connection and saw a familiar face sitting at the keys.

Amos Lee is a really great songwriter in the tradition of Bob Dylan and Paul Simon. If he’s ever in your town, check out his show… He’s got a great keyboard player too.

The Pretenders still rock after 30 years, too.

Super Adventure Club at the Hotel Utah in SF – Dec 12

Super Adventure Club performs Friday, Dec 12 at the Hotel Utah with Belligerator (for their CD release party) and the History Lesson (a minutemen tribute band)

This will be our last show of the year, and our second to last before we head off on our first European Tour. It will also mark the day we finish mixing the record. So please come out and celebrate the many milestones of the twelfth day of the twelfth month. We go on in the middle and the show starts at 9. Check out www.hotelutah.com for more show info.

KFOG Live from the Archives 15 released

wpid-2008-12-01KFOGArchives15-2008-12-1-18-43.png

KFOG’s Live from the Archives Vol 15 came out last week featuring 4 songs that I recorded and mixed with my partner, Boone Spooner

Tracks we worked on

David Gray – You’re the World to Me from Oakland Paramount Theater

Feist – 1 2 3 4 From Bimbo’s 365 in San Francisco

Newton Faulkner  – Dream Catch Me from Slim’s in San Francisco

Matt Nathanson – Car Crash at The Great American Music Hall in San Francisco

I’d have to say the Feist show was my favorite of the 4.. but Matt Nathanson comes in a close second. They’re also the friendliest folks of the bunch. Anyway, proceeds from the album benefit Bay Area food banks, so click here and get yourself a copy

Recording and Mixing Jason Mraz

2008-11-13JasonMraz

Flying Kitchen recorded Jason Mraz at the Greek Theater in Berkeley with the help of our good friend and mastering engineer, Michael Romanowski. We recorded the show for KFOG, so a song or two should appear on Live from the Archives in the coming months.

Lots of screaming and adoring fans, a kick ass horn section and an opening song that felt very much like something Wayne Newton might sing. A recipe for rock if ever there was one, I believe.
