SXSW, AJ Roach, Four Year Bender and other March News

2007-03-28ChicagoMilleniumPark

Had a mighty fine time in Austin running around with old friends and some new ones. AJ Roach played some great shows and also saw some great sets by friends in Zykos, the Whigs, Trances Arc and the Modern Skirts. I managed to sleep a little more this time than previous years, perhaps since our hotel wasn’t 20 miles from the middle of town…

AJ Roach was also featured on the HearYa music blog right before SXSW and Four Year Bender showed up on there a few days after…

Still working on albums for the Moors and Francesca Lee, all of which are going really well.

In some completely non-music related work, I’ve been recording several audio tours for museums this month: one for Millenium Park in Chicago and another for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

Co-Producing My Revolver Album with Boone Spooner

2007-03-13MyRevolver

Recorded an album for the SF band My Revolver in 5 and a half days with my partner in crime, Boone Spooner, co-producing at Sound Arts. The band sounds kind of like a bar brawl between AC/DC, Alice Cooper, and Iggy Pop. It’s raw, loose, high energy screaming with loud guitars and drums. All the good things that rock is supposed to be. They’re playing Bottom of the Hill in San Francisco on Wednesday April 4.

Beth Waters’ new album “This Little Piggy” was named among the best of 2006 on iTunes Indie Spotlight. Beth’s song “Lifeguard” also appears on the “Best of 2006 Singer Songwriter” compilation in the iTunes Store.

Beth will be performing at the Make Out Room in San Francisco on Saturday Jan 13 for an early show to celebrate the release of the CD version of “This Little Piggy”. Larkin Gayl, whose new EP was just released on About Records, will be opening up the show.

A.J. Roach Hits #1 on Euro-Americana Chart

Just got this E-mail from AJ Roach whose album “Revelation” was released in Europe last month…??
??
Hello Revelators,???
Greetings from St. Lucia.

It seems our little record ‘Revelation’ is going to be #1 on the Euro-Americana Album Chart for the month of December!??We are also #5 on the Freeform American Roots (FAR) Chart.  Which, since no American DJ’s even have the record yet, is weird.  Very cool, but still a little weird??Last but not least we have made our debut on the Americana & Roots Top 13– which is based on actual sales and airplay.??Thanks to you all for your help in making and promoting a very fine record!

Let’s keep it up on all the charts for as long as we can!?
Miss you all and see you soon!?
-AJ??
?
Congratulations to AJ

Recording Regina Spektor at the Fillmore

2006-10-30ReginaSpektorWBoone

Recorded Regina Spektor at the Fillmore last night. She’s a really great dynamic performer and songwriter, a gorgeous voice and some very very strange music which I think people either love or hate. Since she sold out the Fillmore, I guess people around here lean towards the love. I thought she was great. Very gracious and unassuming too. We hung out with her and her crew for a while after the show before they headed down to L.A to play the late night talk show circuit. It’s always nice to see the good guys winning.

Recording Tom Petty

2006-10-28TomPetty

Recorded Tom Petty at the Greek Theater on Friday. Great show. It’s amazing to see a band that has been playing together for 30 years. Incredibly, tight and dynamic. Stevie Nicks joined them on a few songs… it was a great show and fun to work with my old friend Joel Jaffe, who was one of the first people to teach me much of what I know about mixing and engineering.

The recording is going to be used on a forthcoming live DVD.
